Diego Maradona named head coach of Gimnasia

Legendary Argentine forward Diego Maradona has been named manager of Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata until the end of the season.

The La Plata based side are currently bottom of Superliga Argentina, having drawn one and lost four of their opening five games.

“Star of world football Diego Maradona has signed his name and is the new coach of Gimnasia,” the club said.

Maradona lifted the World Cup with Argentina in 1986

Maradona left his previous role as manager of Mexican minnows Dorados de Sinaloa in June after citing health issues and following an unsuccessful push for promotion from the second tier.

“Finally it’s now official, I am very happy to be the new coach of Gimnasia” Maradona wrote on Instagram.

Maradona’s most high-profile managing role was with the Argentine national side from 2008 to 2010 when they reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup in South Africa.
