Indonesia and Malaysia share a fierce rivalry

Indonesian and Malaysian fans have clashed before their opening qualifying match for the 2022 World Cup.

The two Southeast Asian nations share a fierce rivalry and fans on both sides have been criticised for their respective roles in violent incidents before the match. The latest encounter happened before their World Cup qualifying match at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.

Footage from the incident has been shared on various social media sites. In one video, an Indonesian Ultras group is reportedly seen attacking Malaysian fans outside the stadium.

The two sides were drawn in Group G alongside Thailand and Vietnam and face a difficult challenge to qualify for the World Cup during a ten-month campaign.

Indonesia were banned from participating in the 2018 World Cup due to perceived government interference in the nation’s domestic league.
