Nigeria are heading to the semi-final of the African Cup of Nations after narrowly beating South Africa in a dramatic encounter at the Cairo International Stadium.
Samuel Chukwueze opened the scoring on 27 minutes and Nigeria held the lead until Bongani Zungu pegged them back in the 71st minute.
Zungu’s header was initially ruled offside but was reviewed by VAR. The cross was adjudged to have touched a Nigerian defender on its way to the goalscorer.
The game then went to the wire with Udinese’s Troost-Ekong tapping home a scrappy effort a minute before full-time. The South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams will be especially displeased as he flapped at the corner and allowed Troost-Ekong to finish in an empty net.
Nigeria go on to face either Ivory Coast or Algeria in the semi-final on Sunday as the competition nears its conclusion.
